February: Black History Month Black History Month In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized the annual celebration of achievements and central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Black History Month celebrates culture and heritage in correspondence with U.S. history. This month reminds, educates, and inspires the public. Importance “I had no idea history was being made, I was just tired of giving up” -Rosa Parks "I am where I am because of the bridges that I crossed. Sojourner Truth was a bridge. Harriet Tubman was a bridge. Ida B. Wells was a bridge. Madame C. J. Walker was a bridge. Fannie Lou Hamer was a bridge.” -Oprah Winfrey, Black History Month Activist

The 40.7 million estimated African American residents in the U.S. make up 13.5 % of the total U.S. population. The influence this 40.7 million has had on the growth of America has changed the course of history. Madame CJ Walker was the first self-made woman to become a millionaire.
