World War One Part 5 The War at Sea

The British Dominate the Seas The United Kingdom had a superior Navy. By the end of 1914 the German flag is swept from the Seas. The Battle of Jutland May 31-June –The German Fleet tries to get to the Atlantic –In spite of Serious British losses it Fails The Germans are restricted to Submarine Warfare

The British Blockades the Central Powers The British used its naval power to stop ships bringing cargo to the Central Powers They would seize contraband cargo such as ammunition, fuel, and even grain. This Seriously affected The Central Powers’ ability to wage war.

The Germans Turn to U-Boats The Germans begin “unrestricted submarine warfare” and sink all allies shipping including passenger ships May 1915 the Lusitania is sunk about 1,200 die including 128 Americans March 1916 President Wilson gives Germany an Ultimatum, stop attacking passenger and freight ships or we sever diplomatic ties! The Germans stop…for a while.
