Subtask 6 Heavy-ion reactions in the Fermi- energy domain Participants: IoP Task leader: Martin Veselsky

A possible option for producing neutron-rich rare isotopes. Use of isospin diffusion to profit from N/Z of the target. Reaction products have angular and ionic-charge state distributions that can be efficiently dealt with using a large- acceptance spectrometer. The experimental data obtained recently show an excess of the production cross sections of exotic n-rich nuclei over the values predicted by models. Heavy-ion reactions in the Fermi-energy domain

 Experiment  DIT/GEMINI --- EPAX 86 Kr + 64 Ni at 25 AMeV Souliotis et al., NIM B204 (2003) 166

What is to be done? 1)Collection of available production cross section data. 2)Benchmarking/optimization of models. 3) Systematic experimental study of the production of n-rich nuclei due to extensive nucleon exchange and n-skin phenomenon, study of energy dependence and optimum projectile-target system. 4) Development of the model description of the n-rich enhancement due to n-skin, based on systematic data obtained in 3). 5) Determination of the optimum energy and target thickness for n-rich production

Goals for the first 12 months Simultaneously with the effort related to Subtask 1 collect available experimental data Benchmark the available models Explore the possibilities to describe the effect of n-rich surface Identify the most interesting n-rich exotic products and corresponding production reactions for experimental study Identify the venue for experimental studies, start preparations
