The Protestant Reformation is the name for the period of religious change in Europe in the 16 th century. A German monk called Martin Luther led the reformation. Luther thought that the Catholic Church was corrupt and should reform. In 1517, he wrote a list of his arguments against the church and nailed the list to the door of a church in Wittenburg in Germany. There were 95 reasons on this list, and so it was later called the 95 Theses. Martin Luther Board Works

Because Luther protested against the Catholic Church, he and his followers became known as Protestants. Martin Luther Board Works

Some of Martin Luther’s criticisms of the Church were: the Church shouldn’t sell Indulgences. Indulgences were pardons which let people buy forgiveness for their sins and meant they could go to heaven the Bible should be in the language of the people who read it, not just Latin, which could only be read by priests the Church taxes people and has too much money. What changes could be made to the Church to answer Luther’s complaints? Luther’s demands Board Works

Martin Luther thought the Church should be available to all people, rich or poor, educated or not. He believed that a good Christian only needed to have faith in God. The Protestants who agreed with him were also called Lutherans. Luther’s complaints were against the Church and so this made him a heretic. Many people in Germany supported his ideas, including powerful lords who didn’t like the pope in Rome getting involved with German politics and taking German money to Rome. Luther’s demands Board Works

The Pope threatened to excommunicate Luther (throw him out of the church). He issued a Papal Bull – a command – to tell Luther this. Luther burned the Papal Bull in public. In 1521 the Diet of Worms was held. This was a meeting at the city of Worms in Germany. At the meeting Catholics and Protestants, including Luther, met to discuss the problem. At the end of the meeting the Edict of Worms was issued – this said that only the Pope could say what the Bible meant, not Luther. Luther translated the Bible from Latin to German so that ordinary people could read it. The impact in Germany Board Works

Henry VIII was a Catholic and at first did not agree with Luther. He didn’t want people in England to criticize the Church because then they might start to criticize the king. However, in 1534 Henry made himself Head of the Church of England following the Break from Rome. After this Bibles were published in English, and land and money was taken from the church in the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The Protestant Reformation in England Board Works

Under Edward VI the Protestant Reformation in England continued. When Mary I became queen she reversed the reforms and everybody in England became Catholic again. When Mary Died Elizabeth (who was Protestant) re- introduced the changes and by the end of her reign the reformation was complete. The Protestant Reformation in England Board Works
