2 Course Objective: Students should be able to relate the use of computers to language teaching and discuss major techniques in using computers in teaching ESL.

3 Course Synopsis This course discusses the concept and theory of computer applications in the teaching of ESL; selection and use of software and website evaluation and the development of computer-based teaching materials in ESL.

11 Assessment: 1) ASSIGNMENT 1 (20%) Web site critique  You will be expected to write a short critique on a language learning/teaching website in the ESL context. Individual or pair activity.

12 ASSIGNMENT 1 (20%): Web site critique The write-up should be more than 5 pages long. Font size 11, arial, doubles paced. Must contain: a) Overview of the website chosen - URL, history, background information, overall description, etc. b) Strengths - e.g. content, organization, layout, activities created, etc. c) Weaknesses d) Suggestions for further improvement of website Conclusion 12

Your critique will be evaluated based on: a) adequate background information on the website b) strengths and weaknesses of the website c) recommendations for further improvement d) organization 12

13 ASSIGNMENT 2 (30%) Activity Plan/Lesson Plan  Search for a video clip (YouTube or elsewhere) that would be useful in ESL teaching.  You will be expected to write an activity plan on how you will integrate the clip into your teaching. A lesson plan format will be required.

14 Midterm Assessment (20%) A combination of multiple choice and short answer questions. Final Exam (30%): A combination of multiple choice and short answer questions generally covering content from the second half of the semester after the mid semester exam.
