Perpetual Inventory Method ●An inventory determined by keeping a continuous record of increases, decreases, and the balance on hand of each item of merchandise is called a perpetual inventory. ●Merchants who use the perpetual inventory system will also do a periodic inventory count on a regular basis to ensure that the inventory on record is what is actually on hand ●Differences? Periodic Inventory Method ●A merchandise inventory evaluated at the end of a fiscal period is called a periodic inventory. ●When a periodic inventory is conducted by counting, weighing, or measuring items of merchandise on hand, it is called a physical inventory. Cost of Goods Sold ●The amount a business pays for goods it purchases to sell is called cost of merchandise. ●Income statement account ●Accounting Concept: Historical Cost ●The actual amount paid for merchandise or other items bought is recorded. All Rights Reserved. ●Cost of Goods Sold will include any expense incurred that is necessary to make an item of merchandise available for sale. ●Shipping costs to receive the item would be included; however, shipping costs to ship the item to a customer would not be. ●Cost of merchandise sold should be included on the income statement only when the goods are sold. ●Accounting Concept: Matching Expenses with Revenue ●The revenue from business activities and the expenses associated with earning that revenue are recorded in the same accounting period. Purchase Invoice ●An invoice used as a source document for recording a purchase on account transaction is called a purchase invoice. ●An agreement between a buyer and a seller about payment for merchandise is called the terms of sale. ●The date by which an invoice must be paid is called the due date.
