STATUS OF COMPASS

/74 Status of the Collaboration MoU signatures Status of the run – Preparation – Run 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting2 Outline

/74 Basically no change: 12 Countries + CERN 23 Institutions 215 Members:141 Paying Members 56 PhD students 11 Diploma or Master students 5 JINR Rotation 2 Exceptions COLLABORATION in /11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting 3 A group from the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (about 10 persons) has manifested interest to join. Discussions ongoing.

/74 Technical coordination issue is solved: the new technical coordinator (Johannes Bernard, Mainz) is in charge since March 1 st, and played an essential role during the run preparation. New Analysis Coordinator (Yann Bedfer, Saclay) appointed to start from January 1 st Using collaboration funds we secured the positions of the two PT experts for the 2015 Drell-Yan run (see Gerhard talk) We setup a test bench to use PanDA/BigPanDA as middle ware for data production (agreement with A. Klimentov, V. Korenkov from Atlas) 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting4 Manpower and key roles

/74 MoU was agreed upon at the 15 th FRC meeting, Dec signed by CERN Directorate S.B. in February 2013 Signed by: Czech Republic Italy Japan Poland Russia-JINR USA France (on February 11, 2014) Not yet signed by: Germany-BMBF Portugal-FTP Russia (for Protvino IHEP and LPI) 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting5 MoU: status of signatures

/ Oct.15-Dec.15: Drell-Yan test (Magnet – Polarized target - Absorber) 2015 Polarized Drell-Yan  p   X 2016 DVCS  p   p  2017 DVCS “ “ 2018 (as mentioned at last FRC by S. Bertolucci) will be also requested to the SPSC. 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting6 Plans

/74 Publications last 12 months Talks at conferences 102 Talks to conferences Among them 15 invited talks or review talks 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting7 Publications and talks at conferences + 9 paper in drafting stage (3 on spectroscopy), most of them well advanced

Ongoing Drell-Yan RUN

/74 Hadron beam: Drell-Yan setup 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting9

/74 Magnet repair and installation Absorber construction and installation New DAQ Sci-Fi vertex detector for the DY DC5 construction 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting10 Major activities

/74 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting11 Absorber construction and installation

/74 Installation 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting12

/74 Ageing of DATE and no revision foreseen for SLC6 New custom made DAQ system based on hardware event builder together with a set of software packages for control and monitoring. The event builder is implemented in nine FPGA modules – Eight modules perform data concentration by merging sub events from up to 15 front-end modules. – The ninth module receives assembled sub-events from the first eight modules, completes the event building, and distributes them to up to eight online computers 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting13 New DAQ preparation Sustained system bandwidth is 1.5 GBytes/s

/74 New Control Room 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting14

/74 Spectrometer commissioning with beam Reference (high flux) in red, present data in blue: 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting15

/74 Magnet reinstalled 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting16 We thank PH for the full support (in particular man power) in this project

/74 Cooling was planned to start at the beginning of September Delivery of helium faced serious problems 1.Failure of the central liquefier. This sums up to a delay of several weeks. 2.Problems with Cryo Group cold box in 888. Specifically: turbine (water cooling), vacuum, power cuts, and electrical problems with the diffusion pump. Problems were finally solved about the 18 th of October and the magnet was cold on the 24 th. At this point the PH-DT group was overloaded with commitments for the restart of LHC experiments and could devote to us only a limited time for: – tests to run the solenoid up to 2.5 T – tests to run the dipole at the nominal field at 0.6 T Problem with Helium delivery for target magnet 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting17

/74 “Solenoid up to 2.5 T” allows to polarize the material. “Dipole at 0.6 T” allows to run the experiment in the same conditions as in polarized Drell-Yan data taking. What is missing is the automatic procedure that, controlling together solenoid and dipole, allows the rotation of the spin from longitudinal to transverse mode. I.E. NO TRANSVERSELY POLARIZED DRELL-YAN DATA TAKING THIS YEAR. 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting18 Impact on 2014 run is

/74 We decided to complete the setup installation before full magnet commissioning Upload the ammonia (NH 3 ) in the target (very delicate operation). Done on 4/11 Complete the installation of the beam telescope needed to track the beam. Completed on 8/11 Finalize the tuning of the beam. Done on 14/11 Go to full intensity. Ongoing this week Final commissioning of the experiment and of the magnet are going on in parallel. Decision 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting19

/74 MC for DY Tungsten plug 7 cm Al target σ=6 cm σ=7±1 cm Tungsten plug and Al target for J/ψ only 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting20

/74 K 0 decay downstream the absorber Correct mass, reasonable width. 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting21 PDG: MeV

/74 J/ψ reconstruction 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting22 On W plug On NH 3 target

/74 Strength of the collaboration is staying constant pilot DVCS run and this year Drell-Yan run confirmed the expected experiment performance for the challenging phase II programme. The Collaboration is in good health for manpower and physics outcome 18/11/2014COMPASS FRC - 17th meeting23 Summary
