Why this course is a bit different An Outcome-Based Approach

Outcome-Based Approach - Why What instructors teach, and what students learn should be directly relevant to the needs of society (i.e. future employers). OBE focuses on this. All universities in Hong Kong doing this for 4-year undergraduate programs in 2012 This approach is endorsed by HKIE, CILT and also ABET (in USA).

Achieving these outcomes as far as possible Evaluating whether the learning outcomes have been achieved Intended Learning Outcomes Teaching & Learning Activities Assessments What we expect you to be able to do Knowledge Intellectual & Professional Skills Personal Attributes Outcome-Based Approach - What

Intended Learning Outcomes Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating Remembering Relative importance in 215 increasing course depth

This Course – A Joint Effort This is one of about 40 courses implementing outcome-based education in this semester Teachers have agreed to move toward an “outcome-based approach” We want to know what works for students We want to know how best to implement this approach for other courses

What does it mean to you Your course evaluation/comments needed - When ? Middle and End of Semester. - What? –Did you understand the intended outcomes for this course? –Did this course help you to achieve the outcomes? –Did the assessments (e.g. HW, exams) help you to evaluate your level of success?
