How has urbanization changed? INTRODUCTION TO URBANIZATION

What is an urban area? Urban AreaUrban Area = Is a built-up area such as a town or city.

What is Urbanisation? Urbanisation =Urbanisation = a process where an increasing proportion of the population lives in towns and cities (and there is a reduction living in rural areas).

Odd one out….. Skyscraper large garden apartment crowded Big car metro system traffic jams no parking Slums hospitals crime air pollution

The worlds population is increasing but not evenly all over the world….. Predict – Write down what you think will be the top 5 most populated cities in the world………. Investigation How has the average line of latitude for the worlds largest cities changed since 1950?

1950 Cites with biggest population Rank (millions) 1 New York, USA London, UK Tokyo, Japan Paris, France Moscow, Russia Shanghai, China Essen, Germany Buenos Aires, Argentina Chicago, USA Calcutta, India 4.4 Draw on the average line of latitude for 1950 Label on a world map in red

Cities with biggest populations Tokyo, Japan (37,126,000) 2. Jakarta, Indonesia (26,063,000) 3. Seoul, South Korea (22,547,000) 4. Delhi, India (22,242,000) 5. Shanghai, China (20,860,000) 6. Manila, Philippines (20,767,000) 7. Karachi, Pakistan (20,711,000) 8. New York, USA (20,464,000) 9. Sao Paulo, Brazil (20,186,000) 10. Mexico City, Mexico (19,463,000) Tokyo, JapanJakarta, IndonesiaSeoul, South KoreaDelhi, IndiaShanghai, ChinaManila, PhilippinesKarachi, Pakistan New York, USA Sao Paulo, Brazil Mexico City, Mexico Label on a world map in blue Draw on the average line of latitude for 2015 Describe what has happened to the line of latitude? Any estimate on the reason for this change?

The latitude of the largest cities (mega cities) has moved south. The most rapidly growing cities are now in developing countries This is because: Rural to urban migration People think there are better opportunities in the city for health, jobs and education Increase in birth rate People see children as a financial asset, to help with work and look after parents in old age Decrease in death rate Better medical care, improved sanitation and water means people live longer Birth rate minus the death rate=natural increase

task Read pg How do urban areas differ from rural ones? 2.Figure 6.2: Where in the world are there the highest concentrations of people living in cities? Describe using countries and regions… 3.How do you think this pattern has changed in the last 10 years since the map? Which countries or regions have become more urbanized? 4.List 4 reasons why high rates of urbanization are occurring in LIC cities…
