Engineering Design Review Example ECE 480

Define the customer problem or product opportunity Customer wish Example: I want a robot assistant to go to Spartys in the Engineering Building and buy me a hot tea and deliver it to me during my lecture here in EB 1145.

Customer Critical Requirements (As a result of VOC) Need to get the order to Spartys Order needs to be correct (I like English Breakfast tea – not Earl Grey tea) Need to pick up and transport the hot tea Need to pay for the order Hot tea needs to delivered hot and unspilled If the robot has a problem I want to be informed

System level engineering specification Order and payment system is needed that communicates from me to Spartys that initiates the order and indicates the time of the pickup Robot needs to receive communication to pick up the hot tea, location of pickup and location of delivery Robot needs to leave from its current location and arrive at Spartys within one minute of the requested order pick up time Robot needs to transport the hot tea to me within 3 minutes so that it stays hot Robot needs to safely transport the tea without hitting people or things (or spilling the tea) Robot needs to return to its home base and recharge batteries so it is ready for the next request

Engineering Design Subsystems Delivery System Navigation System Robot Order System Map of building Plan navigation route Sense location Home base with battery charging (power management) Communicate with order system Needs navigation information Sense when hot tea picked up and when delivered Communicate problems with customer Control acceleration rate Avoid collisions Adroid phone app GOOGLE pay Communication to Spartys Communication to Robot

Assign Resources (People) Delivery System Navigation System Robot Order System Select Robot Home base with battery charging (power management) Communicate with order system Needs navigation information Sense when hot tea picked up and when delivered Communicate problems with customer Control acceleration rate Avoid collisions Map of building Plan navigation route Sense location Adroid phone app GOOGLE pay Communication to Spartys Communication to Robot Tim (Navigation) Sally (Phone app and system integration) Jane (Communication systems) Bob (Robotic platform and power) Lisa (Sensor systems)

System Level Schedule and Milestones This will also be done as a GANTT Chart Establish Key Milestones Example: Pick Robotic platform (Week 6) Establish communications from Phone to Spartys and make payment (Week 8) Establish Communication from phone to robot (Week 10) Design way to hold hot tea cup (Week 9) Establish navigation system working by following directions given to someone walking route and sense location (Week 11) Install collision sensors on Robot and test (Week 10) Have first prototype working –robot travels route (Week 11) Have final prototype working (Week 14) You will have more detail in you final GANTT chart
