How it got its name? Blue Fairy Penguins are also known as “Fairy Penguins”, “Blue Penguins”, and now officially known as “Little Penguins” They got their names because of their size and their color. Little Penguins are the smallest of all of the types of penguins.

Where do they live? Little Penguins live on the coast of Australia and New Zealand They mostly live in the water and only come to the land during the night time, except when they have babies. Sometime Little Penguins will stay in the ocean for weeks without coming on land.

What do they Eat? Blue Fairy Penguins eat small fish that they catch in the ocean. They eat mostly pilchards, anchovies, and squid.

How do they have babies? Blue Fairy Penguins begin to lay eggs when they are 2-3 years old. They lay two eggs a year in the spring time or the winter time. Both parents take turns sitting on the eggs to keep them warm.

Predators: What harms them? Fairy Penguins are threatened by sharks and seals while in the ocean. While on land dogs, foxes, and ferrets threaten the slower penguins. Plastic pollution also threatens Fairy Penguins. Fishing line, plastic six pack holders can strangle young penguins.

What are some fun facts about them? Blue Fairy Penguins say in ocean most of their life and spend very little time on land. They are the smallest of all of the penguin species. They can dive up to 65 meters (about 214 feet). They can swim up to 20 kilometers a day (around 12.5 miles). They can sleep in the ocean for up to 4 minutes at a time.
