Background Information What do I mean by background information? –Background information is one or two sentences that give a great summary of your topic. What can be used as background information? –Definitions of topics (What is euthanasia? What are designer babies? What is global warming?) –A summarizing statistic Where is background information located in your introduction? –Right after your motivator! *This is different than your transitional/background paragraph…this is only 1 or 2 sentences!

Thesis Statement What is a thesis statement? –A thesis statement is a single declarative sentence that states what your paper is about. It guides your writing. In our case the thesis states what you are trying to prove. –THIS WILL NOT BE A QUESTION! How do I come up with a thesis? –You already have one, but in the future, you must think of a statement that summarizes your entire paper. Persuasive—what are you trying to prove Definition—what is the definition of the term Comparison Contrast—what is your main point Where is a thesis statement located? –Right after your background information and right before your blueprint.

Blueprint What is a blueprint? A blueprint provides a direction to the reader by listing the three major points that will be discussed in your paper. Where is the blueprint located? The blueprint follows your thesis statement and is at the end of the introduction.
