Time Management (Part Two) Review and discussion of last week’s assignments Time Management Tools Time Scheduling Tips Time Bandits Procrastination

Last Week’s Assignment What are your BIG Rocks ? Where are you spending your time? Are you spending your time on the things that are important to you? Are you trying to do too much? What changes can you make?

Time Management Tools Semester/Monthly Schedules – Allows you to keep track of important dates and deadlines. Weekly Schedules – Start by filing in your “must do’s”. Daily “To Do” Lists – Prioritize each item on the list using either A, B, or C.

Building a Weekly Schedule Start with your courses Calculate needed study time Add reoccurring responsibilities & appts. such as work and volunteer time Schedule study time Include “me” & “flex” time Include time for meals, travel and errands Schedule shouldn’t be set in stone

Time Scheduling Tips Estimate how much time it will take (formula) Do it now Use your class time well Start projects as soon as they are assigned Divide each task into small, manageable chunks Use small blocks of time well (3x5 Cards) Flag start dates Save shopping, housework or physical activities for late in the afternoon. Delegate! Call ahead Include an hour of flex time into your schedule Get ready the night before (lunches, clothes, bag)

Time Scheduling Tips (cont). Study two hours for every hour in class Study your most difficult subjects first Know and use your “best times” Anticipate crunch times Try it for five minutes Take regular breaks Review your notes regularly (Daily & Weekly) Study where you’ll be alert. Agree with living mates about study time Establish a regular study area Hang a do not disturb sign on your door Say no or not now

Watch for “Time Bandits” (Monkeys on your back) /chat Internet Use Television Phone/Pager Lying Down Errands Procrastination

What is Procrastination? Letting low priority tasks get in the way of high priority task. (I know I have something I need to do, but I’m not going to do that now because….) Why do we procrastinate? perfectionism, fear of failure, fear of success, fear of discomfort, overdoer, crisis junkie. What kind of procrastinator are you? List your excuses for procrastinating. What is procrastination trying to tell you?
