Cells

Historical Perspective Robert Hooke He used a crude light microscope that magnified 30X He discovered cork cells

Anton Von Leeuwenhoek He was considered the father of the microscope By 1700 he discovered and described a number of cells which he identified as “animalcules” These organisms included protists (pond water) and even bacteria

Matthias Schleiden Over the next 175 years, research led to the formation of the cell theory, first proposed by the German botanist Matthias Schleiden. He discovered that all plants were made of cells.

Theodore Schwann In 1839 he helped to define Cell Theory He discovered that all animals and living things are made of cells

Rudolph Virchow Discovered that cells come from other cells This formed the 3 rd part of Cell Theory

Cell Theory All organisms are composed of cells The cell is the basic unit of structure and function of organisms All cells come from preexisting cells

Cell Theory cont. Repair, growth, movement, communication, and digestion are carried out inside of cells. Cells are alive. The individual cells of your organs are just as “alive” as you are, even though they cannot live independently. You need water because your cells need water.

Many Scientists Working Together And Sharing Information = Cell Theory!
