Treatment of Cellulitis

Primary Treatment Nafcillin or oxacillin, 2 g IV q4 – 6h – Beta Lactam Antibiotics – MOA: interferes with the transpeptidation reaction of bacterial cell wall synthesis – Indications: Susceptible infections due to penicillinase-producing staphylococci. – AE: hypersensitivity – DI: May be antagonized by tetracycline. Potentiated by probenicid.

Alternative Treatment Cefazolin 1 g IV q8 – MOA: inhibits cell wall synthesis – Indications: Respiratory, GIT, GUT, otic and bone, skin, soft tissue and post-op infections, bacteremia, septicemia, endocarditis, surgical prophylaxis – AE: Shock, hypersensitivity reaction, granulocytopenia, eosinophilia or thrombocytopenia, GI disturbances, CNS effects – DI: Aminoglycosides, potent diuretics, probenecid
