Spheres

Lithosphere  The lithosphere is the brittle outer layer of Earth  The plates of plate tectonics are segments of the lithosphere  The lithosphere is basically the layer of the earth that is strong enough to flex rather than flow  Its top is easy to see at the earth’s surface, but the base of the lithosphere changes to a fiery liquid  The details of that transition are an active area of research

Hydrosphere oToThe hydrosphere is often called the "water sphere" as it includes all the earth's water found in the oceans, glaciers, streams, lakes, the soil, groundwater, and in the air TThe hydrosphere interacts with, and is influenced by, all the other earth spheres TThe water of the hydrosphere is distributed among several different stores found in the other spheres WWater is held in oceans, lakes and streams at the surface of the earth WWater is found in vapor, liquid and solid states in the atmosphere

Atmosphere TThe earth is surrounded by a blanket of air, which we call the atmosphere IIt reaches near or over 372 miles from the earth, so we are only able to see what occurs fairly close to the ground EEarly attempts at studying the nature of the atmosphere used clues from the weather, the beautiful multi-colored sunsets and sunrises, and the twinkling of stars WWith the use of sensitive instruments from space, we are able get a better view of the functioning of our atmosphere LLife on Earth is supported by the atmosphere, solar energy, and our planet’s magnetic field

Biosphere LLife is an integral part of the Earth system LLiving things influence the composition of the atmosphere by “inhaling” and “exhaling” carbon dioxide and oxygen  They play a part in the water cycle by pulling water from the soil and the air, and they help put it back again by exhaling water vapor and aerating the soil so rain can soak into the ground TThey regulate ocean chemistry by taking carbon out of the atmosphere EEarth would not be the planet that it is without its biosphere, the sum of its life

Interaction of the Spheres  Plants need water, soil  Life needs water to drink, air to breath, and soil to walk around  People need water to drink, air to breath, and soil to walk around  Trees need carbon dioxide and people give off carbon dioxide  People need air and trees give off air
