What makes up matter? Chapter 4 Lesson 1

Vocabulary atom matter molecule physical property states of matter (solid, liquid, gas)

Matter Matter: anything that has mass & takes up space It has different properties: size, shape, texture, color, odor What is matter made of? Atom: smallest particle of an element Molecule: particle of matter made of 2 or more atoms

3 States of Matter Definition: 3 forms matter usually takes – solid, liquid, gas ice = solid water in a pool = liquid water vapor = gas Physical Property: characteristic of matter than can be observed by the senses Examples: size, shape, color, odor, texture

STATE OF MATTER SHAPE SIZE ICE definite shape fixed size LIQUID no definite GAS no fixed size

Solids Liquids Gases

**increase in temperature equals increase in energy Gas Liquid Solid
