PVAAS Looking Back How Effective are We?

Quintile Diagnostic Report: A view of growth based upon where the group profiles compared to the state distribution Gives a more disaggregated view of higher achieving groups

Quintile Diagnostic Report: GIEP Subgroup Whole Grade GIEP Subgroup

Evaluating Impact of Gifted Program Services & Supports Is the program meeting the needs of all students identified? Are some students benefitting more than others? Are the enrichment opportunities we’ve put in place working for all students adequately and equitably? What pattern of growth are you seeing? Which groups of students are showing positive growth? Which groups of students are not showing positive growth? What implications does this have?

Custom Diagnostic Report Customized report that allows a user to examine growth for groups of students that are defined by the user. Explore effects of intervention programs, varied curricular, and/or instructional experiences, etc. Determine and identify patterns or trends of progress among students with similar educational opportunities. This report is available at both the district AND school levels! Fall 2013 PVAAS Statewide Team for PDE

Custom Diagnostic Report Enables users to view the growth of the lowest, middle, and highest achieving students in the user-defined group. – This does not mean these students are low, middle, and high achieving. – Achievement is relative to the group selected by the user! Fall 2013 PVAAS Statewide Team for PDE

Creating a Custom Diagnostic Report There must be at least 15 students selected within the same grade level or Keystone content area and with two consecutive years of data for a report to be generated! Fall 2013 PVAAS Statewide Team for PDE

Why do at least 15 students need to be selected? PVAAS cannot estimate growth for fewer than five (5) students. In order to provide comparison groups, the report splits the selected students into 3 groups. Therefore, there must be a minimum of 15 students so that each comparison group has a minimum of 5 students. Fall 2013 PVAAS Statewide Team for PDE

Using the Custom Diagnostic Report Fall 2013 PVAAS Statewide Team for PDE

Using the Custom Diagnostic Report Examining the growth of 4 th grade students in the gifted program. What might you conclude? What might you investigate further? Fall 2013

Additional Questions to Consider  Did students in the High group have a different experience in the gifted program than the other students? Or, did all students receive the experience that varied in its impact on student growth, depending upon the entering achievement level of the student?  Were different instructional strategies used with the students in the various groups? Or, were the same instructional strategies used with all students, producing different amounts of growth, depending upon the entering achievement level of the student?  Was the time allocation the same across all students? Fall 2013
