The 5 W’s Who, What, When, Where and Why

 Who – United States and the Native Americans

 Natives did not think that the U.S. have authority over them.  Fighting breaks out – Natives resist the U.S.

 1790’s

 Northwest territory – between Appalachian Mtns and the Mississippi River

 U.S feared European interest in the area.  Wanted complete control over the area and everyone in it.

 Fighting breaks out between the Natives and the United States.  Battle of Fallen Timbers  Impact – Native Americans lose all hope of keeping the land in the Northwest Territory.

 Who?  Farmers vs. United States government

 Tax on whiskey (grain) led to attacks on tax collectors.

 July 1794

 Western Penn

 Tax on whiskey – caused farmers to lose money.

 G.W. sends in U.S. army to crush farmers resistance.

 G. W. used as an example: government would use force when necessary to maintain order  Citizens could change laws peacefully, not through violence.
