Symbolic Culture (nonmaterial) Gestures: are body movements that communicate to other people
Language Language: a system of symbols that can be combined in an infinite number of ways to represent objects and thought
Values Values: The standards by which people define desirable or undesirable, good or bad, beautiful or not
Norms Norms: rules of behavior Sanctions: are approval or disapproval when violating or upholding norms. Folkways: norms that are not strictly enforced Mores: norms that are strictly enforced (essential core values) Taboo: a norm so strong that it brings revulsion if violated
