Inquiry Topic: Wikis in the Classroom Catherine Madnick

What I want from you Suggestions to narrow my focus Wiki activity/project ideas Bless, address, and press

Me 9 th Grade Social Studies Teacher 4th year at Monticello High School Tenure Year 14 years teaching experience including 10 at private school

My School Monticello High School has 1,087 students 53% white, 23% black, 21% Latino, and 2% Asian graduation rate is 68% 49% eligible for free lunch currently in Restructuring

My Classes 3 Core Classes: 1 inclusion, 1 regular, 1 Honors 2 AIS: Academic Intervention Services 1 Academic Focus: enrichment class taught in the library computer lab

What brought me to this topic? Technology in the Classroom/grad course Wikis were introduced. I tried it. I liked it.

The Big Picture: Web 2.0 recent change in internet use from “read only” to highly interactive web services Face Book, Twitter, My Space, wikis, blogs, remix spaces, multiplayer online games users create and share content

The Big Picture: Web Main Components: 1.Participation=getting involved with content 2.Collaboration=working with others on content 3.Distribution=putting your stuff out there

The Big Picture: Web 2.0 a new mind set, a new ethos, a new practice, indeed a new world view (Knobel and Wilber, 21) In my words, it is a new gestalt (Madnick). – Content is co constructed – Non-experts can join – No single authoritative voice – Content is agreed upon by the community

Whatsawiki? website consisting of user-created pages connected by hyperlink pages are edited by using basic word processing tools message boards, discussion boards, internal uploads multi media

My Wiki bluewiki

In the Future There’s the possibility of being a wiki expert and training other teachers at my school.

Inquiry questions Are wikis fun? Do students build a wiki community? Do students show participation, collaboration, and distribution on a wiki? Can I measure participation, collaboration, and distribution? Am I a facilitator and how does that look?
