Helping Your Child Succeed in Middle School Through this meeting you will be able to gain different strategies and resources to better help your child with academic support at home. Topics will include: Edline Account Resources for Academic Support Expectations for the Students Homework Tips and Resources Study Skills

By the end of this session you will gain information on: Parkland’s Academic Expectations How to stay connected with the school and school district How to monitor your child’s academic performance How to better support your child’s academic needs Additional resources available

Parkland’s Academic Expectations “Every student, whatever it takes!” Students at Parkland are expected to maintain a 2.0 grade point average. this means students should be earning at least a C in all classes.

Study Skills Establish a quiet well lit working environment. There should be a set time so that this habit becomes structured and consistent. Allow for your child to take breaks. Build in positive key messages.

Study Skills Ask your child questions about their homework. If they are reading a text ask what the main idea of the text is. Have them preview the questions/assignment prior to working.

Strategies for Supporting your Child’s Academic Success Look at your child’s progress reports and report cards Ask questions if you need help understanding them Know what the tests and Assessments your child will be taking, such as MAP-R/M, PARCC, WIDA Use Edline to keep track of your child’s grades Attend parent-teacher conferences, back to school night, and parent meetings. Check your child’s agenda the counselor and teachers for questions
