Guide : When the Dvaravati period was replaced by the Khmer dominion in the 12 th century, Kanchanaburi was also culturally influenced by the Khmer Empire, This shrine is therefore, evidence of the expansion of the influence of the Khmer Empire in this area. Tourist : Who built this shrine ? Guide : The ‘Prasat’ or shrine was originally constructed at the command of King Jayavoraman VII, who reigned over the Khmer Empire in the 12 th century.
Tourist : Was it one of his palaces ? Guide : No, it wasn’t. From discovered evidence such as sculptures and a stone statue of Bodhisatva we believe that the shrine was used as a Mahayana Buddhist temple. The statue of Bodhisatva that you see in this shrine is only a replica. The original one is now on display at the National Museum in Bangkok. Tourist : What kind of material was used in constructing this shrine ?
Guide : The shrine is mainly made of laterite. The walls are built of laterite blocks. The floors are paved with laterite blocks. A few sandstone slabs were also used. Tourist : I wonder why this shrine is not elaborately decorated like other shrines in Northeast Thailand. Guide : Probably the laterite does not lend itself to intricate decorations and the workers could have been local artisans who were not as skiful. Tourist : I’d like to take a stroll around the ruin and explore it by myself. Guide : Please feel free to do so and get back to the bus in about half an hour.
