Organization, Proposal and Funding We hope to finish the revised proposal this week Need some cleanup I added a section on simulation needs – should be vetted. I have generated a strawman schedule with milestones A preliminary funding request has been submitted to Daniela Will probably not be fully funded by CMS and we will be asked for priorities It would be worthwhile exploring additional “generic” funding. A second proposal which will explore more conventional interconnect technology has been submitted to CMS Some overlap in proponents Considerable overlap in R&D subjects – simulation, circuit design, overall architecture I expect (and hope) that there will be some rational combination of these efforts (more later) 1

Goals Demonstrate 3D interconnect concept Demonstrate Interposer technology Interposer material Via density, interposer thickness mass Study overall architecture Begin electrical simulation Understand connectivity and power consumption Begin mechanical design Module design and mechanical properties Rod design and properties Simulation of interaction between physics and track trigger design Thresholds Rates 2

Pt Module Proposal There is a recent proposal to CMS by Goeff and Anders to prototype “Pt modules” using more conventional technology. Although the module design would be different, there is overlap in much of the work, including circuit design, architecture, simulation, off-detector components, communication … I think two parallel, overlapping efforts would be at best, counterproductive and some level of coordination is needed as soon as possible In discussions with Goeff we discussed a model where there would be one person assigned to coordinate efforts among the groups in the short term until a structure is formed by the tracker group. I would hope that the efforts would be coordinated and ultimately diagonalized by CMS. 9
