Austria and Serbia Austria is scared of Serbia and Russian alliance Austria annexes (takes over) land that Russia and Serbia wanted Austrian Archduke Francis Ferdinand- shot and killed by a Serbian nationalists. The assassin, 19-year-old Gavrilo Princip burned with Slavic nationalism. the death of the Archduke was the key that would free his people from the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
