Active Reading Poetic analysis requires readers to carefully examine the diction of the poem. Why did the poet choose one word over all others? Readers must bring their experiences to the poem to give it meaning. If a reader is unable to relate to the events of the poem, the poem fails to be relevant. Look at “Those Winter Sundays” on page 802

Active Reading “In the Morning” In the morning, he wakes minutes before his wife, who wakes every morning to the smell of hot tea.

Theme A theme is an insight about life or human nature which gives a story meaning. A theme is NOT the same as a moral! A theme must apply to all people, and it must be stated as a complete sentence.

Poetry Analysis (TPCASTT) Title: Before reading the poem, what does the title signify? Paraphrase: Translate the poem in your own words. Connotation: Contemplate the poem beyond the literal meaning. Attitude: Observe the speaker’s and the poet’s TONE. Shifts: Note shifts in speakers and tones. Title: Examine the title again on an interpretive level. Theme: Determine the insight about life or human nature which gives the poem meaning. For class work, analyze “Those Winter Sundays” on page 802, using TPCASTT.
