HR Design: Onboarding April 7, 2015

GOALS FOR SESSION Understand requirements of the new campus Onboarding Policy and why they benefit your department. How to best use the resources.

ONBOARDING Definition From wikipedia: “The mechanism through which new employees acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and behaviors to become effective organizational members and insiders.” The campus policy defines the timeframe of Onboarding as beginning with the acceptance of the new job and spans the first year of employment.

ONBOARDING Rationale A well executed onboarding program “enhances job satisfaction/engagement and shortens the time from hire to full productivity by ensuring that new employees receive the support, tools, and resources they need, including a welcoming environment and clear expectations from their supervisors.” - UW New Employee Onboarding Policy

ONBOARDING Requirements Begins with accepted job offer and spans first year. Assign Onboarding Coordinator to initiate onboarding process for each new hire and act as contact for new hire. Provide Orientation to her/his work unit. Schedule meeting with Supervisor on first day. Assign a peer partner
