I. Words to know 1. Social Context- a. we are all connected socially. -society and experience shape our ideas -“If you had a happy childhood, then your view on life is positive…” -“If you’ve had a rough childhood, then you tend to have a negative outlook on life…” 2. Creative power- a. We are free to determine our own goals in life -“Humans have the free will to accomplish what they want…”

I. Words to know continued… 3. Teleological nature of people- a. Human behavior is goal oriented. -personal goals are based on personal interest and experience -“My father is a mechanic, so I like cars and engines…”

Teleological words to know: I. Private Logic- -unconscious reasons for a person’s behavior. -“ I’m angry with my mom, so I’ll get into trouble at school to make her angry with me. Then we’ll be even…” -we may do extreme thing to attain our goals. - “I have to pass this class, so I’ll cheat if necessary…” II. Social Interest- -the overall goal of all people: -connection with a social group (family, friends, etc…) at any cost. -“I have a supportive loving family, so I’m satisfied…” -“My family s not there for me, so I’ll find social connection in a gang…”

II. Family Constellation (Birth Order) According to Adler: “Family birth order shapes our behavior and attitudes toward society…” “We develop our attitudes and lifestyles by age 6…” 1. 1st born (oldest child) a. Responsible for protecting others b. Good leader c. Follows the rules 2. 2nd born (middle child) a. Competitive (tries to catch up to the oldest) b. Cooperative (works well with others or in groups) 3. 3rd born (middle child) a. Feels left out b. Lost in the middle c. lack of attention may lea to problems. 4. Youngest child a. “spoiled at times…” -may lead to dependence on others b. Seeks attention (class clown) 5. Only child a. Relates well to adults b. Center of attention c. Generally successful

III. According to Adler, people have social emotional issues because: 1. Unrealistic (mistaken) goals. a. Attention- -“I’m only successful when I’m the center of attention…” b.
