Football Problem Shelby Hampton and Katie Petersen

The height of a punted football can be modeled with the quadratic function: h=-0.01x²+1.18x+2 The y-intercept of this equation is 2. This represents the ball starting 2 feet off the ground.

Vertex Vertex: x=-b/2a x=-1.18/2(-.01) x=59 – Plug this into equation and solve for y Vertex=(59,36.81)

Vertex equation y=-.01(x-59)²+36.81

The nearest defensive player is 5ft horizontally form the point of impact. How high must the player reach to block the punt? y=-.01(5-59)² y=7.65 feet

What is the ball’s height when it has traveled 20 yards downfield? 1yd=3ft 20yds(3)=60ft y=-.01(60-59)² y=36.8 feet

How far downfield has the ball traveled when it reaches a height of 6 ft.? 6=-.01(x-59)² ft.=x

When does the ball hit the ground? 0=-.01(x-59)² ft=x approx. 40 yards downfield
