Students will recognize how the body metabolizes nutrients found in food and what calories are. Each person will become aware of how to portion their food. What do you think of when you hear the word food? WHAT IS FOOD? Food is a source of enjoyment! Food is enjoyed at celebrations with family & friends. Food satisfies hunger. It is an important aspect of social life. Food gives the body energy.
Your body needs food and the food you eat affects your health in many ways: FOODS SUPPLY NUTRIENTS How you look & feel! How you resist disease. How you perform mentally and physically. Nutrients: substances the body needs to regulate bodily functions, promote growth, repair body tissues, and obtain energy.
Is the process by which the body takes in and uses the nutrients. 40 different nutrients are required to complete the task of good nutrition. NUTRITION:

The foods you eat are your body’s energy source. You rely on the energy from food for everything you do----running, playing a musical instrument, playing sports, sleeping. You need energy to maintain your body functions----heart beating, body temperature, breathing, thinking etc. Things your body does that you do not realize it is doing. FOODS SUPPLY ENERGY A process by which your body breaks down food to release energy. When your body uses the nutrients in foods, a series of chemical reactions occur inside your cells and energy is released. Metabolism: This energy is also used for the growth and repair of the body.

FOOD & NUTRITION Nutrition is far too complicated to understand! A wise nutritionist said, “Simply look at your plate of food. What do you see? If you see a variety of colors---green, yellow, orange, and so on---you have a fairly nutritious meal. If on the other hand you see foods that are all the same color---brown meat, brown gravy, brown fried potatoes---you are likely to have a less nutritious meal.”

FOOD PORTIONS With all the different selections of food, portion size becomes a big issue! Over eating causes the body to store the unwanted calories as fat in the body.
