Chapter 10 Odds and Ends

Activation Energy The energy needed to start a reaction and break chemical bonds in the reactants Without enough activation energy, a reaction will not happen. This is why a fire does not start without a spark or flame to supply the activation energy.

Types of Chemical Reactions – Addition Reaction  Addition reaction: 2 or more substances combine to form a new compound.  A + B = AB  Polymerization: Creating polymers (large molecules made up of repeating segments) through a series of addition reactions

Types of Chemical Reactions – Decomposition Reactions  Decomposition Reaction: A single compound is broken down to produce two or more smaller compounds.  AB  A + B

Types of Reactions: Displacement Reaction  In a single displacement reaction one element replaces a similar  A + BC  B + AC

Types of Chemical Reactions: Precipitation Reactions  A precipitate is a solid product that comes out of solution in a chemical reaction.

Types of Reactions: Combustion Reactions  40% of the energy we use comes from petroleum (oil) and 2/3 of that is gasoline and diesel fuel.  Petroleum is a mixture of substances created over millions of years.  Contains mostly hydrogen and carbon, with oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur  In an engine not all the fuel burns completely and pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulfuric acid, etc. are produced and released into the air.

Types of Reactions: Nuclear Reactions  Because they affect the nucleus, nuclear reactions can change on element into a different element.  Nuclear reactions involve much more energy than chemical reactions.  Nuclear reactions can convert mass into energy.
