NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory POIWG #34 July 23, 2013 Tim Horvath Payload Ops Director Downlink Video – What is new and different? Approved for Public Release; Distribution is Unlimited

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 2 New Video Encoders and Camcorders  As of May 2013, new video encoders and camcorders were deployed on ISS  XF305 model camcorders replaced the G1 camcorders, and are now referred to simply as “Camcorders” in the procedures  HD video encoders were added to augment/replace MPC  US Lab, Node 2, and Node 3 currently have the new encoders installed  JPM MPC remains installed and operational  US Lab MPC was removed  Further installations of HD encoders in other modules is TBD at this time

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 3 Downlink Video Options  This presentation is specific to camcorder-sourced video (i.e. not video from internal to a rack/payload)  If you want downlink video using a camcorder, these are your options:  Standard Definition – Live, during AOS  Standard Definition – Recorded for later playback  High Definition – Live, during AOS  High Definition – Recorded for later playback  The following slides explain and show each of the options and how they are implemented in ops products  Note: the examples in this presentation assume standard camcorder setup. Custom configurations require specific/unique procedure steps, and are not shown here

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 4 Standard Definition Video  For standard camcorder setups, there will be a crew procedure step to instruct crew:  Field of view instruction, if needed, is defined in either the procedure or Execution Note:

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 5 Standard Definition Video  For live SD video, DMC routes the camcorder signal through the Ku Comm Unit and to the ground via one of six downlink channels  For recorded SD video, e.g. during LOS periods, DMC routes the camcorder signal to the Ku Comm Unit for recording  Playback of recorded SD video is controlled by DMC, usually within a few hours of the activity  No crew action is required for live downlink, recording, or playback of SD video, other than the camcorder setup

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 6 High Definition Video  For standard camcorder setups, there will be simple crew procedure steps to instruct crew:  Field of view instruction, if needed, is defined in either the procedure or Execution Note  Live HD video is possible with the new camcorder, in modules the new encoders are installed  Currently Node 2, Node 3, US Lab  Live HD is still possible in the JPM using the G1 camcorder and the JEM MPC  For live HD video, DMC routes the camcorder signal to the ground via one of six downlink channels

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 7 High Definition Video  HD video is not recorded on the Ku Comm Unit  There are two options for getting recorded HD video to the ground from the new camcorders:  Crew action to copy video file(s) from SD card(s) to SSC, then downlinked via OCA. Simplest and preferred method, no additional crew time needed Receipt of the video is via dub request  Crew-controlled playback using the camcorder, pressing “play” at AOS and “stop” prior to LOS Similar to the old MPC P/B windows, requires crew time and call-ups Used when the video is needed in near real-time

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 8 Summary  New video encoders and camcorders provide more options for HD video  Any activities requiring camcorders will require changes to accommodate the new hardware, whether SD or HD  All affected Increment 35/36 payload procedures and planning models have been edited via real-time OCRs  Future increment products will be built using the new callouts  Your Ops Lead and PARC are available to help!
