DL Forum 1st December 2009 Summary of workshop outputs from last DL Forum and proposals for the future

Distance Learning is important Strategic aim for student recruitment: 25,000 students by 2013 Can only be achieved by DL 41% of the total student numbers & 67% of post graduate students are DL How can we grow sustainable DL?

What we looked at: Course Design and Development of DL Course Delivery/Tutoring Operations and systems Student Support

Characteristics of Present Getting There- what needs to happen Characteristics of Future Fragmented databases Leadership/passionate about customers and listening to staff Comprehensive, single student records Hard work and commitment Leadership that shares our commitment to a culture of change Equity of student experience regardless of Mode Good relationship with DL students and administration staff – retain Clear about allocation of responsibilities between depts & centre We shouldn’t be paying for services we don’t use Good specialist support from the centre (welfare and accessibility) - retain FundingWe should have services we are entitled to- more centralised student support

Characteristics of Present Getting There- what needs to happen Characteristics of Future Heavy reliance on course administrators Prioritise the right information to centralise and cost Address problems and issues with online registration Not 24/7 student support Market analyses – strategic market identification and market needs Central 24/7 support that maintains quality Course design confused (process and designing) – traditional bias Staff training in course design DL induction to show students where they can get help Market information weak (course viability) Central course design service Match courses to market need Variance in DL practiceFind out about what is going on Better DL courses design that include online delivery

Characteristics of Present Getting There- what needs to happen Characteristics of Future Variance in DL practice Find out about what is going on Better DL courses design that include online delivery DL different to campus based Recognition that there are different ways of doing things and that it is ok for some things to be done differently. Balance some centralisation and recognise departmental expertise University wide recognition of DL roles (equity of campus/DL) HR delivery should be devolved to department – need to keep the practice consistent with policy (e.g : Associate tutors)
