Lower L’Anguille Watershed Cost Share – Phase III Patricia Perry, St. Francis County Conservation District

Project Goals Encourage use of BMPs to reduce erosion from agricultural land in the L’Anguille River Watershed Introduce producers to core practices to avoid, control, and trap water pollutants Provide incentives to implement conservation practices

Project Objectives Conduct Annual Outreach Meeting Transfer Knowledge ▫Newsletters ▫Newspaper Articles ▫Radio Spots ▫Mail Outs Provide 40% Cost Share to Implement Practices Cost Incentive Payments for Specific Practices Reap Improved Water Quality Benefits

Phase I – Success! Goal – Implement BMPs on 10 Farms Measure of Success – BMPs on 44 Farms $80,000 in Cost Share $118,000 in Producer Investment Number of Additional Applications....Phase II

Phase II – Success!! Goal – Implement BMPs on 25 Farms Measure of Success – BMPs installed on 76 Farms $180,000 in Cost Share $282,000 in Producer Investment Additional Applications... Still a Need....Phase III

BMPs Cost 40% in Phase III Drop Pipes & Water Control Structures Streambank Stabilization Irrigation Water Conveyance Pasture Establishment & Prescribed Grazing Critical Area Treatment Pond Filter Strips Tree Establishment Dike & Diversion

BMPs With Incentive Payment No-Till ▫$8 per Acre on Highly Erodible Land ▫$4 per Acre on Non-Highly Erodible Land Cover Crop ▫$15 per Acre

Phase III – 1 st Year Goal for Phase III – BMPs on Additional 20 Farms 20 Applications in 1 st Year 855 Acres of Cover Crop & No-Till 44 Drop Pipes 9858 Feet of Irrigation Water Conveyance $22,600 Cost Share - $56,500 Producer Investment

Measures of Success Producers Willingness to: ▫Make Personal Investments in BMPs ▫Change Historical Farming Practices ▫Generate Interest in Other Producers Life Expectancy of Practices Insures Long Term Success Improved Water Quality Improved Soil Fertility
