Low Carbon Heat Expert Support Programme Adam Swainbank Scottish Development International 23 February 2016

Scotland’s Low Carbon Heat Ambitions The Scottish Government has set ambitious targets to reduce overall energy demand, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and increase the amount of heat generated from renewable sources:  Substantial domestic economic opportunity  Help Scotland to develop a resilient, sustainable low carbon economy 11% of heat demand to come from renewable sources (non-electrical) by TWh of heat demand and 40,000 homes connected to a district heating scheme by % energy reduction target % C02 reduction target by % C02 reduction target by 2050

Demand Heat demand is currently at the core of Scotland’s energy system – it is the largest source of CO2 emissions at circa 24.8 Mt CO2e (47%) and the biggest element of energy use at circa 80TWh (55%) per year.

The Opportunity - Scotland In Scotland alone, the cost of replacing existing heating equipment between 2010 and 2050 has been estimated at £100 billion.  Low carbon heating is a growing market in Scotland  Significant opportunities in district heating, waste heat recovery, geothermal and heat optimisation  Scotland is moving towards an smart integrated energy systems that will drive technological innovation and stimulate new economic opportunities

The Opportunity - Nationally and Internationally The global heat technologies market is a large and growing opportunity, with cumulative turnover forecast to reach £308 billion by Low carbon heating solutions are anticipated to taken an increasingly large share of this market as more and more nations seek to decarbonise their heating systems in a drive to meet emissions targets.
