English 100 Tuesday, The Basic Terms of Argument Claim (fact, value, policy) Support Warrant Audience Five Paragraph Structure

English 100 Tuesday, Terms of Argument Claim - answers the question, “What are you trying to prove?” – aka Thesis Statement or Controlling Claim The claim is that which you wish the reader to think or believe after reading your paper.

English 100 Tuesday, Terms of Argument Claims of Fact - assert that a condition has existed, exists, or will exist, and are based on facts or data that the audience will accept as being objectively verifiable

English 100 Tuesday, Terms of Argument Claims of Value - attempt to prove that some things are more or less desirable than others. Claims of Value often begin with opinion, but through following the rules of argument, they move from opinion to generally agreed upon ideas or actions.

English 100 Tuesday, Terms of Argument Claims of Policy - assert that specific policies should be instituted as solutions to problems.

English 100 Tuesday, Terms of Argument The Support - that which you use to convince your audience that what you argue is valid and sound. Evidence - support statements consisting of facts, statistics, and testimony from experts. Motivational Appeals - support statements that the arguer makes to the values and attitudes of the audience to win support for the claim.

English 100 Tuesday, Terms of Argument The Warrant - a belief or principle that everyone already knows and agrees upon which is either stated or unstated. Many times we assume that an idea is warranted and fail to establish it as so. This opens our arguments to criticism.

English 100 Tuesday, Audience Even when we write an essay, our basic stance is that of one who is engaged in some form of conversation or dialogue. In this way, the audience must factor in to how we form and express our arguments. In writing your own arguments, you should assume that there is a reader who may not agree with you. In addition to providing abundant evidence for your claim, you should also strive to achieve credibility. According to Aristotle, you achieve credibility through “intelligence, character, and goodwill”.
