Presentation transcript:

Overview: In this unit, we will explore the immigration trends and population of ELL students in the United States. We also will address some of the unique challenges facing ELL students in terms of emotional and social development.

Immigration Trends…. What types of immigration trends are we seeing in the United States in terms of LEP (Limited English Proficient)/ELL students?

Immigration Trends… About 2.3 million LEP students in grades k-12; this is an increase of almost 70 percent since 1984 California, Texas, NY among the highest LEP enrollment followed by Florida and Illinois Most common second languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Korean Almost half of LEP are immigrants and about 40% in poverty

Immigration & Education… Why is it important to effectively educate students who are LEP/ELL identified?

Immigration & Education Review initial screening and continuously check for oral language proficiency since parents might deny lack of language Student might be shy and reluctant They will be our future. We want successful, highly motivated, and enthusiastic students for our country. They are individuals, should be treated equally No bias

Considerations… What are some of the social and emotional issues that paraprofessionals should be considerate about when interacting with ELL students?

Social-Emotional Language barriers Discrimination Loneliness due to leaving family and friends if immigrants Economic stress Lower sense of belonging How does the inability to communicate in English sometimes affect students' self-esteem and socialization?

Paraprofessionals Role… b0NJ6UClI b0NJ6UClI What is the role of paraprofessionals in helping to educate students who are ELLs?

Considerations… What are the effects do immigration and educating ELLs have on our society and economy?

Considerations… Students will become our future Society providing jobs for the parents- we need to provide the best education Our economy will grow with students’ parents as workers Facilitate the learning process Provide opportunities to excel Increase acceptance, awareness, respect among cultures Create a melting pot Diversity

Discussion Question: Why might parents be reluctant to identify their children as needing ELL instruction?

Weekly Quote… “Through learning language, we learn about culture. Through learning about culture, we learn respect for others. Through learning respect for others, we can hope for peace.“ ~Author Unknown
