An Introduction to Internet Based Instructional Strategies (Option #2) Created By Sabrina Thomas

Internet Based Instructional Strategies We will discuss the following Strategies: Subject Sampler, Hunts, Scrapbooks, and Virtual Field Trips. I’ve focused each of these on China since we are required to teach it in depth this year!

Subject Sampler This is a site about a specific topic that links interesting information about that topic. This is a great tool to use as an introduction to a specific topic to get the students motivated and excited to learn more!

Subject Sampler Here’s an example to get you excited about China! My China

Knowledge Hunts, Treasure Hunt or Scavenger Hunt These strategies are useful because they enable students to answer specific questions about a given topic while on their “hunt” through pre- determined websites. Perfect for First Grade, because it could be done as a class activity. You will also have no need to worry about inappropriate content, because each site has been previewed in advance.

Knowledge Hunts, Treasure Hunt or Scavenger Hunt We will go through a sample “hunt” to show just how cool they really are! The Treasures of China

Multimedia Scrapbook These are awesome tools that our students could use to make learning more memorable. Students gather information on a particular subject and cut and paste the information they find to a particular place.

Multimedia Scrapbook This is not limited to photos. You could also add videos, audio clips, and student work. Students could make their own “class scrapbook” of things they have done this year to keep at the end of the year!

Multimedia Scrapbook Here’s a great example of a multimedia scrapbook! China Scrapbook

Virtual Fieldtrip This a field trip you can take without leaving your classroom! You can take students to places they would not normally be able to go. You can use this to prepare students for a field trip they really will take.

Virtual Fieldtrip Let’s go to China!! Virtual Field Trips in China

I hope you enjoyed this presentation and will use some of these excellent strategies in your own classroom!

Team Meeting Results I created this power point by using a template in Microsoft Power Point. I chose the strategies from the table that I thought applied most to my curriculum level and then focused those resources on China, a topic that was new to us this year and that we had difficulty teaching. I was so excited that I have learned how to insert the hyperlinks into the slideshow and my colleagues were really impressed! I shared this presentation with my 11 team members at a meeting on the afternoon of January 22, They thought the strategies were interesting and asked me to them this presentation so that they could take more time to go in-depth with the links I provided. They asked if there are many of these sites out there, or if they would have to create their own virtual field trips, etc. When I explained that many of these sites were readably available they were much more interested. It seemed that the thought of creating their own was overwhelming to them, a thought that I can completely understand! I think most of them will at least take the time to research the sites I provided, even if it is for their own knowledge and not something that they present to their class. I plan to share all of the projects I create with them to encourage them in the process of integrating technology into their classrooms.
