NCETM Annual Conferences moving onwards

Vision The NCETM aims to ●meet the professional aspirations and needs of all teachers of mathematics ●realise the potential of learners

Objectives To stimulate demand for mathematics-specific CPD, contributing to the strengthening of the mathematical knowledge of teachers. To lead and improve the coordination, accessibility and availability of mathematics- specific CPD. To enable all teachers of mathematics to identify and access high quality CPD that will best meet their needs and aspirations

My Personal Vision My vision is that the NCETM will provide opportunities for all teachers of mathematics to embark on their own personalised mathematical CPD journeys

●Unerring focus on mathematics ●Developing excellence in teaching mathematics across all phases of education by sharing knowledge and practice ●Commitment to placing teachers’ needs and goals at its core ●Commitment to working in partnership to influence policy & practice Some key characteristics of the NCETM’s offer

NCETM activities… …blended for success ●face-to-face events & network meetings ●personal interactions with the NCETM portal

Adding Value in Mathematics CPD partnerships between schools, colleges & HEIs Manchester, December 2008 over 200 delegates Worked in partnership with MoreMathsGrads, University of Manchester, Mathematics Department Paul Glendinning was very stimulating. Workshops were useful for info gathering and networking. Plenary was lively and interesting for final slot All excellent. Peter McOwen's talk - fantastic. Open talk very interesting. Lots of fascinating and useful ideas to investigate and think about One Message I remember Subliminal messages and cues can shape learners’ views of about mathematics, often negatively, at a very early stage – if the maths part of the primary school day is introduced with a sigh and ‘Ok, now, we’re going to do mathematics’, the message that maths is hard, or boring, is conveyed, rather than a sense of excitement.

Transforming Mathematics Teaching & Learning through CPD International conference Bristol delegates Launch of the NCETM RECME report Delegations from National Center for Mathematics Education, (NCM) Göteborg University, Sweden University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany Keynote Prof Jan Van Manaan Freudenthal Institute for Science & Mathematics Education As ever, it was useful to have the chance to sit back and reflect on what's currently going on in our school and how it relates to everything presented It was useful to have the opportunity to focus upon the area, relevant to my own practice for a full, dedicated day One Message I remember Teaching and researching are possible in the classroom and are mutually beneficial

STEM and the gifted and talented learner:Inspiring the next generation of STEM success York May 2009 NCETM STEM project It really IS rocket science! Message Now we are starting the hard work to identify how mathematics & science teachers can best work together

Influential Mathematics Teachers IMT conferences Nearly 550 delegates in total Dissemination of HMI report Mathematics: Understanding the Score I went along because I needed the boost of feeling good about my KS1 team... AND I REALLY DO. I can see we do lots of things really well, and the session gave me a great model to scaffold my Key Stage meeting tomorrow which will hopefully boost the rest of the team into feeling like we are achieving highly! An excellent event. Really cannot wait to use the self-evaluation tool - and encourage staff to use it Message from Jane Jones HMI, Specialist Advisor for Mathematics We need to think carefully about who to influence? how to influence? what aspects of mathematics are the most influential in developing the mathematician in each pupil?

London Headteachers Event Headteachers talk about creating and sustaining excellent mathematics departments Jan 2009 Delia Smith, headteacher I believe that teaching is a craft, something you learnt year by year by watching, modelling, analysing, sharing and co-constructing; by peer observation and shadowing Minister for London Schools, Sarah McCarthy-Fry MP The 30 per cent increase in the number of students studying maths at A level since 2002 is very encouraging… The creation of the NCETM is part of this upward drive And we thank the National Centre for all its work…. Major challenges of recruitment and retention of good mathematics teachers Projects and outreach work takes energy and costs but what you get back in the way of staff involvement and development is priceless London Headteacher The NCETM is extending this work across England and to primary schools
