Measuring Volume

What is Volume? Volume is the amount of space that an object takes up. All solids and liquids have a measurable volume. Why not a gas????

So how do we measure Volume?? There are three different ways. Using a graduated cylinder. Using a ruler. Using water displacement.

Measuring the Volume of a Liquid Use a Graduated Cylinder. This is the most accurate instrument we will use to measure the volume of a liquid. In most cases, we will be reading our volumes in mL.

Reading the Meniscus The volume of a liquid in a graduated cylinder is read by looking at the lowest point of the meniscus. The Meniscus is the curve that forms at the water level of a graduated cylinder. You must be at eyelevel to properly read the meniscus.

Try These!!!

Measuring the Volume of a solid Two types of solids, Regular and Irregular. Regular solids are objects with flat even sides that are easy to measure Regular solids have formulas for calculating their volume. V=Length x Width x Height. We can measure all of these with a ruler!!!

Example Ex. This box has a length of 5 cm, a width of 8 cm. and a height of 6 cm. V= l x w x h V= 5 cm. x 8 cm. x 6 cm. V= (cm. x cm. x cm.) V= 240 cm 3.

So what about Irregular solids??? An irregular solid has an irregular shape and therefore does not have flat even sides. How would we measure the volume of a rock? Or a certain amount of sand??? We can’t use a ruler, so we have to use a technique called WATER DISPLACEMENT.

Water Displacement When an object is dropped into a container of water, the volume of the water displaced is equal to the volume of the object. If we measure the volume of water before we drop an object into it, and after, the difference is the volume of that object in mL. Final volume – Initial volume = Volume of the object.

Try this one!!! Anthony wants to know the volume of a cool rock he found. He fills a graduated cylinder with 53.2 mL of water. He then drops the rock in the water and reads the volume. He finds that it has increased to 74.2 mL. How much water was displaced? Final volume – Initial volume = Total Volume Displaced mL – 53.2 mL = Total Volume Displaced mL = Total Volume Displaced.

So…. 21 mL. of water was displaced. What is the volume of the rock??? Conversions?? In terms of volume, 1 mL = 1 cm 3. Lucky us!!!! 21 mL = 21 cm 3.

Recap What is volume? The amount of space an object takes up. What units do we use to measure volume? mL and cm 3. What are the three ways we measure volume? Ruler, Graduated cylinder, and Water displacement A ruler is used to measure the volume of….. Regular Solids. A graduated cylinder is used to measure the volume of….. Liquids and Irregular solids.
