Review of Process Process began with Committee Meetings to develop preliminary recommendations to Board of Education  Committee held (4) meetings to develop preliminary recommendations  Committee presented recommendations to Board of Education on January 13, 2007  Board directed Committee to conduct (2) Community-Wide meetings to share preliminary boundary recommendations and obtain input from community members  (2) Community-Wide meetings held

Review of Process Community informed of key components used to determine boundaries:  Students should live as close to their school as possible (neighborhood schools)  Safety Issues (minimizing crossing of major streets/highways)  Student enrollment should match with design capacity of schools  Minimize transportation  Try to keep students together as they move between schools (clean feeder patterns)  Balance schools by socioeconomic status, ethnicity, etc.. (to the extent possible)

Overview of Community Meetings Two Community-Wide meetings held:  Valley Elementary – March 8, 2007  Park View Middle School – March 15, 2007  Notification: Letters sent home to all students Reminder notices sent out Schools provided information in their school newsletters Boundary Maps printed in News Mirror “Chatter” Messages given to parents in District

Overview of Community Meetings Input from Community Included:  Intra-District Transfer opportunities for those that want to stay at their previous school  No mandatory movement of students at any site until schools are opened  Concerns about future high school boundaries  Transportation support for new boundaries  “Open House” provided to parents prior to enrolling in new school  Ensure proper placement of crossing guards for ES #8

Overview of Community Meetings Other Community Input:  “Thanks for opening up this discussion with the parents and community at large.”  “Good job on the boundaries.”  “Thank you for the presentation and allowing parents to express concerns and ask questions.”  “I came to the meeting, not happy, but better understand the reasons behind the change now.”

Final Elementary Recommendations ES#8 Boundary includes students from MCES, VES, RES, and DES WES, YES, CES not affected Next slide includes new elementary school boundaries Link to Elementary Boundaries Map Effective Fall 2008 (.pdf) Link to Elementary Boundaries Map Effective Fall 2008 (.pdf)

Final Middle School Recommendations DES, VES, WES, and CES to attend MVMS ES#8, RES, YES, and MCES to attend PVMS Boundaries allow for comparable enrollments at both Middle School sites Next slide includes new middle school boundaries middleschoolboundaries.pdf

Additional Recommendations Intra-District Requests:  Give priority to students affected by new boundary if they are in their final year at previous school  Give priority to distance if within close proximity to previous school Safety:  Have District Safety Officer work with City of Yucaipa to review crossing guard placements and add additional stops as necessary Open House:  Request Principals at affected elementary sites to host “Open House” in Spring of 2008 for students whose boundaries have been changed  Continue with Middle School orientations for incoming 7 th graders

Implementation Schedule Elementary Boundaries:  Parents to be notified this fall of new boundaries and projected implementation for August, 2008  Parents will receive final notification in January, 2008 as we will have construction schedule finalized at that time Middle School Boundaries:  Parents will be notified this fall of new boundaries and projected opening timeline

Questions/Comments Special thanks to all committee members who committed their time and efforts to this important process!
