{ The Cherry Orchard Act 1

 Paying attention to both stage directions and character speeches related to setting, how is Chekhov using the setting to add meaning to character words and actions? How is Chekhov using the setting metaphorically? Think large scale (the cherry orchard) and small scale (closed vs. open windows). Setting

 GAYEV : The train was two hours late. What kind of efficiency is that, eh?  CARLOTTA : And my dog loves nuts.  SEMYONOV-PISHCHIK: Really! I don’t believe it! What “stage business” could be happening? How can you explain the way Chekhov constructs this dialogue? Make this make sense….

 As a table, group the characters in a way that makes sense to you.  Your grouping could be based on their ideas, their social class, their behavior or their role.  Be ready to explain your grouping. How would you group the characters?

 Ideas, themes, motifs, objects of symbolic importance you are noticing?
