 Only transverse waves can be “sorted” using polarizers  Polarizers only allow waves vibrating in the direction of their openings to get through.

POLARIZATION Limiting the direction of the light waves by use of a filter.

Polarized sunglasses

Polarizing filters

USES Some light is polarized to create the numbers on a display. If you rotate a filter over these numbers, they will be polarized again and disappear.

Polarizing laminate is used to reduce glare on car windows. Buildings also use polarized glass to reduce light and glare.

3D VISION Oppositely polarized filters can be used to give light a slightly different angle and create a depth of field for the person viewing the image.

Color Filters can also be used for 3D effects

3D effects are due to an image being seen at slightly different angles in each eye. This is done using polarizing filters or color filters and overlapping images. The brain puts the images together and creates the depth of field. WN

Hold your index finger out and look at it with one eye closed. Without moving your hand, close your eye and look at your finger with the other eye open. We see in 3D.
