Unit 1 Vocabulary

Term Drawing/ Example Definition Matter Anything that has mass and volume Elements A substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance Atom Smallest part of an element; the building block of matter

Term Definition Electrons Neutrons Protons A negatively charged particle located outside an atom’s nucleus. A particle that has no electric charge and is located in an atom’s nucleus. A positively charged particle located in an atom’s nucleus. Insert your own drawings for electrons, protons, and neutrons. As we learn more about atoms, you may want to add to your drawings later, so leave space! Drawing/ Example

Term Example/ Drawing Definition Atomic Mass Atomic Number Insert your own drawings or examples for atomic mass and weight. The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom’s nucleus The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.

Term Drawing/ Example Definition Physical Property Characteristics of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. Solubility A measure of how much of one substance dissolves in a given amount of another substance.

Term Drawing/ Example Definition Melting Point The temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid Boiling Point The temperature at which a substance in the solid state becomes a gas Conductivity The measure of the ease at which an electric charge can pass through a material

Term Drawing/ Example Definition Ductile Capable of being drawn out into wires LusterDescribes how shiny an object is Brittle Likely to break, snap, or crack when subjected to pressure. Malleable Ability to be hammered or pressed permanently out of shape without breaking or cracking

Term Drawing/ Example Definition Metals An element that tends to be malleable, have luster, and a good conductor of electricity and heat Metalloids An element that has properties of both metals and nonmetals. Nonmetals An element that does not conduct heat or electricity well and is dull and brittle or gaseous
