Top Two Reasons Why Students Cheat  Students like to take the easiest route possible. Some do it by asking “will this be on the test”  Many students are procrastinators and put things off to the last minute These can be limited by:  Give the students a friendly reminder that they are here to learn and strengthen skills.  Talk to them about priorities and time management skills. Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

Three Forms of Plagiarism  Copying and pasting to create a paper made of several sources  Faking a citation  Copying an article from the web or an online source Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

How to Detect Plagiarism  Copy and Paste: Papers often have a different tone and the intro and conclusion are slightly different  Faking A Citation: You can discover this just by checking the cites randomly  Copying From Online: If you receive an essay that is well written without a citation, it could have been copied off line. Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

What is Plagiarism?  Plagiarism is a piece of writing that is presented from student that has been copied and is used as their own work. Discussion Points  Educate yourself about plagiarism  Educate your students about plagiarism  Discuss the benefits of citing Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

 If students are exchanging papers, they are usually not the best quality and the citations are not recent.  Some students buy papers. So if you get a well written paper, give out an in class assignment and compare the quality.  If you have an assignment that you do every academic year, keep paper from previous years and compare them.  Some students may shorten a quote or beef it up. By making sure of this, check all sources. Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

 Do not assume that students know what plagiarism is.  Talk to students about citations, quotes, and paraphrasing.  Discuss why plagiarism is wrong and how they can prevent from doing it.  Give them a list of consequences if they decide to plagiarize.  Provide examples of situations where students have been caught plagiarizing. Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

 By citing a source, it strengthens their writing skills.  The research that they found, they can turn it into their own argument.  Quoting adds to your paper and can result in a better grade.  Also by citing, it shows that a student has respect for other peoples ideas and viewpoints. Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

 By educating yourself about plagiarism, will help you educated your students about it.  By educating your students about plagiarism will help them do their own work and earn the grade they deserve.  By explaining the benefits of citing will also give the student confidence to write their own papers and to not be afraid of using someone else’s work. Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

Plagiarism Can be eliminated or limited by:  Making the assignment clear Many students get overwhelmed with an assignment. By making an assignment clear, students can get a better understanding of what they have to do.  Provide a list of specific topics Giving students a list of topics to write about will help them with decide which way they want to go with their paper. Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

 Require Oral Reports of Students If you give an assignment, and a student does all of his or her research, then they should be able to give a quick oral report on what they learned.  Making Penalties Clear By making penalties of plagiarizing clear will force a student to do his or hers own work. Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

Look For Clues Know Where The Sources For Papers Are Not enough referring back to the sources A mixture of different cited sources of APA and MLA If student goes off topic Words that do not fit into what they are talking about Out dated information If a student has an unusual foramt Know where to look Get software the helps you detect if a paper has been plagiarized Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

Curbing Cheating In this article, its talking about how cheating has become a major problems in high school & in college. It goes on to say is there really a problem with cheating. In a survey they did in 22 public schools, 74% of juniors and seniors said they have seen cheating in the previous year. Know that cheating is a problem, The Center for Academic, pointed out what can be done about it. Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

Curbing Cheating They mentioned developing standards, they also mentioned creating a process for a violations, and also establishing academic integrity. McCabe, Don; Katz, Daniel. (2009). Curbing Cheating. Education Digest, 75 no Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

Agreement  I agree with the article because I believe that to keep a student from plagiarizing, if they submit a paper, it shows if there are any matching parts to papers already in the system.  I also agree with the fact that the English teacher, Keith D. Klein, explained what the website does. If student know they would not have a problem with submitting their papers if its their own work. Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010

Disagreement  One thing that I disagreed with the most, was the fact that the students were taking people to court. Robelen, Eric. (2007). Online Anti-Plagiarism Service Sets Off Court Fight. Education Week, 26 no36 1, Aurielle Wilson EDU 290 April 20, 2010
