Finding the main idea and details can help you summarize the text. When you summarize, you briefly restate in your own words what the text was about. – An example of giving a summary from the main idea and details is when you tell a friend about a TV show or movie you watched. When you summarize, it is important to tell the most important information and not every detail. Take 2 minutes to tell each other about a TV show they have seen recently. – Could you tell what the show was about based on your partner’s summary.

(distance from family and friends; depression; isolation) – Visualize margin prompt on Anthology page 19: Imagine your house without anything in it. What would you need to buy online so you could live in it for one year? What did you picture when you imagined your home without anything in it? What is one thing you would want to buy right away? – Ask Questions margin prompt on Anthology page 22: After reading this passage, what questions would you like to ask DotComGuy? – What questions would you like to ask? What part of the text sparked those questions?

What’s the main idea and supporting details for paragraph 2? – (Main idea: He said he was motivated to show the world how all-embracing electronic commerce,or e-commerce, had become. Supporting details: He terminated his face-to-face interactions. He wanted to prove he could manage with only a computer.) – Summarize the paragraph. To keep your summaries brief, imagine that each word used in the summary costs a dollar. Let’s see who can write the most effective, but least expensive summary. (DotComGuy wanted to prove how all-embracing e-commerce is by terminating face-to-face contact and using only a computer.) Remember that paying attention to main ideas and details will help you summarize when you read textbooks. Summarizing can be helpful when you are studying or trying to learn something new.
