Symbolism

What is Symbolism? Symbolism is a symbol in the text that has several layers of meaning. The hidden meaning is different than the literal interpretation. Uses an object or action that means something more than its literal meaning.

Infer To come to a conclusion using evidence.

Foreshadow To suggest or hint about something that has not happened yet.

Finding the Connection with the Symbol in the Novel Does it foreshadow any events? Does it reveal any information about the character? How might this be significant to the story?

Primrose It’s a flower that represents love, courage, and devotion. How does this reflect the character Primrose? She is courageous because she is a healer like her mother. She is devoted to her mother and does not resent her for becoming depressed, unlike Katniss. Prim loves very dearly– not just her family but animals and all living things too.

Prim’s Cat, Buttercup Buttercups symbolize humility. How does this relate to the text? Describes Prim because she is a lover of all things. She nursed it back to health and was unable to let Katniss kill it. Sets up a distinct difference between Katniss and Prim.

Prim’s Goat, Lady Goats are extremely curious and intelligent, and are known for escaping their pens. Chinese Calendar Year: shy, introverted, creative, perfectionist. How does this relate to the text? Prim is often shy, introverted, curious, intelligent, and creative. Katniss is curious, introverted, intelligent, and is always going outside the fence of District 12.

The Dandelion “Our eyes met for only a second, then he turned his head away. I dropped my gaze embarrassed, and that’s when I saw it. The first dandelion of the year. A bell went off in my head. I thought of the house spent in the woods with my father and I knew how we were going to survive. To this day I can never shake the connection between this boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope and the dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed.”

The Dandelion The bread gave her hope and dandelion reminded her that she was not doomed. What did she start doing after Peeta helped her? She began to hunt to provide for her family.

The Mockingjay Came as a result of a failed project by the Capitol to spy on the rebellious districts. Represents the Capitol’s failure. The Mockingjay pin is the first representation of defiance. The salute District 12 gives her the second symbol of defiance.

The Mockingjay Pin Madge gives her the pin after the reaping. What does the pin symbolize? Individualism The jabberjays broke free of the Capitol control Foreshadowing? Rebellion and Resistance Do you think she is mocking the Captiol?

The Silent Salute Is it okay to appear to be united in the districts? What does this symbolize? Defiance Resistance, but not rebellion.

Food Food is everywhere in the Capitol There is not enough of it in the districts What does food symbolize? Wealth Freedom

Panem The word panem is Latin for “bread.”

Entry Task Take out your AR books and begin reading.

Tracker Jackers They are Capitol muttations– like the Jabberjays. What do the Tracker Jackers symbolize? Capitol’s ruthlessness and willingness to do anything to stay in control over EVERY living being.

Rue’s Flowers Wild flowers symbolizes thoughtfulness. The receiver of wild flowers is someone very special who deserves the time and effort it takes to gather the flowers. Symbolizes Katniss’ love and friendship with Rue. Symbolizes an intense act of rebellion.

The Meadow Song- Daisy Flower Daisy = purity and innocence Song= tribute to Rue’s life; reminds the audience of her humanity and the Capitol’s inhumanity. Hint: You can also add this to your theme handout.
