A Change in Food Production Under the new political systems, citizens could equally own and manage landUnder the new political systems, citizens could equally own and manage land Many new inventions and methods developed in the way food was being producedMany new inventions and methods developed in the way food was being produced These created a revolution in agricultureThese created a revolution in agriculture

New Methods of Agriculture Under the old political systems in Europe, people worked for the nobles.Under the old political systems in Europe, people worked for the nobles. –Villages would have to feed themselves –Land use was very inefficient –Food production could not meet the growing population The new systems allowed farmers toThe new systems allowed farmers to –Mass produce food to meet population needs –Use the land more efficiently –Exchange crops with others –Use new techniques to increase food production

New Agricultural Methods 1.The Enclosure Movement -farmers started to fence their pastures and fields -villages lost land and control over the open spaces -Access to land and resources became harder for non-land owners 2.Crop Rotation -rotating crops allowed more nutrients to stay in the soil -produced better crops -increased crop yields -Let farmers utilize the lands all year long and every season 3.Selective Breeding -only allowing best livestock to breed -increased meat production and yields

New Agricultural Inventions 1.Seed Drill-invented by Jethro Tull -before the agricultural revolution, farmers would spread seeds by hand (broadcasting); many seeds wouldn’t germinate -The seed drill allows farmers to sow seeds in well-spaced rows at specific depths at a specific seed rate -increased rate of germination, and a much- improved crop yield up to eight times more than by hand

New Agricultural Inventions 2.Cotton Gin- invented by Eli Whitney -a machine that quickly and easily separates the cotton fibers from the seedpods -cause a massive growth in the production of cotton -price of cotton decreased and it became more available to the people

Results of the Agricultural Revolution 1.Dramatic increase in population because of food availability 2.A surplus of food in society that could be bought, sold and traded 3.An increased demand for consumer goods and food 4.Changed women’s role in society from working in the fields to the service industry 5.Led to advances in transportation, refrigeration, and many other technologies
