Ethics and Social Responsibility Introduction to Business FALL 2015 Mr. Eleuteri

DO NOW Why do you think we started teaching ethical decision making in unit 1? What area of your life might present you with an ethical dilemma within 3 months? Why should all codes of ethics be written in the positive?

Standard Describe the ethical and legal responsibilities of businesses in this cluster and explain their implications for guest/customer and employee conduct.

Goals Define ethics and business ethics Identify steps using the ethical decision making model. Illustrate a code of ethics. Solve ethical dilemmas and create positive decisions

Definitions/Ethics v. Morals Ethics- the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group, culture, etc. which are based in legality: medical ethics; employee ethics. Morals-founded on the fundamental principles of right conduct rather than on legalities, enactment, or custom: moral obligations.

Continued Code of ethics- a set of guidelines which are designed to set out acceptable behaviors for members of a particular group, association, or profession. (Written in the positive) – Example: Please refrain, Employees shall, All employees must…, Employees will serve all customers promptly etc.

Continued Social responsibility- A company has responsibility to refrain from acting (resistance stance) or it can be "positive," meaning there is a responsibility to act (proactive stance). Support ball teams(uniforms) or the community (Build a park, a.k.a. community service).

Activity 1 Please upload handout ethicaldecisions1.doc.

Activity 2 Please get in groups of 3 to work on case study hypothetical questions.
