EQUATIONS WRITING AND SOLVING EQUATIONS

WARM UP

INTERPRETING, WRITING AND SOLVING EQUATIONS 1.Read the problem through from beginning to end. 2.Draw a picture if you can. (Does the problem mention a shape? – triangle, square, rectangle, etc.) 3.Identify key words that will help you decide if you must add, subtract, multiple or divide. 4.Do they mention words like area, volume, perimeter etc.? Write down the formula. 5.Check! Check! Check! Plug your answer back into the equation and make sure that the LHS = RHS.

The sum of eight times a number and fifteen is seven. Find the number.

Twelve less than the quotient of a number and 7 is – 2. Find the number.

Mr. Piper’s plumbing needed repairs. The plumber charged $98 for parts plus $45 per hour for labor. If the bill totaled $458, how many hours of labor were required?

Working as a waiter, Michael earns $6.50 per hour plus tips. Last night he received $38.50 in tips and earned a total of $ How many hours did he work?

A triangular course for a sailing race is marked off by buoys. The first leg is 250 meters longer than the second, and the third leg is 100 meters shorter than the first. If the length of the course is 2,500 meters, find the length of each leg.

The length of a rectangle is 7 centimeters greater than the width. The perimeter is 54 centimeters. Find the length and width of the rectangle.

The length of a rectangle is 3 times the width. The perimeter is 120 meters. Find the length and width.

The perimeter of a triangle is 26cm. Side A of the triangle is 3 cm longer than side B. Side C is 1 cm shorter than twice side B. Find the length of each side.

Lexi sold 4 more boxes of candy for the school fundraiser than Marta. The sum of the boxes they sold was 22. How many boxes did each girl sell?

A wire is cut into three pieces such that the second piece is twice as long as the first, and the third is twice as long as the second. If the wire is 21 cm long, how long are the pieces?

Boys were born to a family in each of 3 consecutive years. This Christmas their grandparents give them each $42, which is equal to the sum of their ages. How old is each boy?

The sum of the measures of two complimentary angles is 90º. Find the measure of the angle labeled x. 3x - 10 x

The sum of the measures of the three angles of a triangle is 180º. Find the measure of the angle labeled x. x 2x - 1 x + 5

The sum of the measures of the four angles of a quadrilateral is 360º. Find the measure of the angle labeled x. x + 30ºx

Spend time this weekend reviewing your notes. Be ready for a short “pop quiz” on Monday.
